Obama resolves to defeat Islamic State

Obama on Sunday urged Americans not to “succumb to fear” or accept the threat of terrorism as a “new normal,” vowing as the United States intensifies its military campaign that defeating the Islamic State was “not only a realistic goal, we’re going to get it done.”
In a news conference closing a three-nation tour of Asia, Obama seemed to acknowledge the critique that he’s misjudged the threat of the Islamic State while at the same time challenging its validity, expressing resolve to defeat the terrorist network “with every aspect of American power” but later arguing the best way to do so would be to deprive it of the exalted status its leaders seek.

Obama Speaks:

At one point the president seemed to dismiss the radical group as “a bunch of killers with good social media” as he was asked to explain to the American people just how it should view the security threat it poses.
In addition to the military action and intelligence gathering, “the most powerful tool that we have to fight ISIL is to say that we’re not afraid,” Obama said, using an alternate term for the Islamic State. “To not elevate them, to somehow buy into their fantasy that they’re doing something important.”
Throughout his nine days overseas — a trip that ultimately takes him fully around the globe before returning to Washington Monday — the president’s characteristic drive to urge patience and restraint in a media and political climate that often tolerates neither has only been more difficult.
In a nearly hour-long press conference he repeatedly urged the public to take a long view of recent events, saying for instance that Americans should “catch our breath” amid a political storm over the prospect of accepting Syrian refugees. Obama said the kind of “prejudice” shown in the debate, including some “radical” ideas from Republican presidential hopefuls, “helps ISIL and undermines our national security.”
“And so even as we destroy ISIL on the battlefield — and we will destroy them,” he said, “we want to make sure that we don’t lose our own values and our own principles. We can all do our part by upholding the values of tolerance and diversity and equality that help keep America strong.”
Allowing Bashar Assad to continue leading Syria is ‘unimaginable,’ Obama says
Allowing Bashar Assad to continue leading Syria is ‘unimaginable,’ Obama says
The president did say it was understandable that Americans are afraid of the threat of terorrism. He invoked the memory of Nohemi Gonzalez, the 23-year-old Californian killed in Paris, as well as another American killed in the more recent attack in Mali — saying they reminded him “of my daughters, or my mother.”
“It is worth us remembering when we look at the statistics that there are beautiful, wonderful lives behind the terrible death tolls that we see in these places,” he said.
Still, Americans should “not accept the idea that terrorist assaults on restaurants and theaters and hotels are the new normal or that we are powerless to stop them.”
After returning to Washington Obama will meet with French President Francois Hollande to discuss the next steps in the international campaign against Islamic State after a series of attacks in Paris killed 129.
The president said there was increasing awareness on the part of the Russians that Islamic State represents a greater threat to them “than anything else in the region.” He has criticized President Vladimir Putin for being more interested in propping up President Bashar Assad than combating a terrorist threat that he said took down a Russian airliner; on Sunday he reiterated that Assad could not play a role in any solution to the Syrian civil war.
“There are large numbers of members of this coalition including President Hollande who agree with me on that,” he said.

Dutt to be free in 3 months

PUNE: Incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, whose five-year sentence for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts was confirmed by the Indian Supreme Court in March 2013, will be freed from prison by March 7, 2016, official sources said here on December 8.
The sources indicated that barring last-minute glitches, Dutt would be released by March 7 after completing the remaining 42-month period of his sentence.
Dutt was acquitted of terror charges under the TADA, but found guilty of possessing illegal arms, acquired ostensibly to protect his family during the communal conflagration that engulfed Mumbai after the demolition of the Babri Mosque on December 6, 1992.
Following the Indian apex court orders, his bail was cancelled and he was ordered to surrender within four weeks, which he complied with on May 16, 2013 and was lodged in Arthur Road Central Jail.
A week later, he was shifted to the Yeravada Central Jail, Pune, where he has been lodged since then and has earned the reputation of being a well-behaved inmate.
Of the five-year sentence, the actor had already served 18 months as an under trial and was required to undergo another 42 months, which is now on the verge of completing.
In between serving time, Dutt was granted either parole or furlough on various grounds, attracting a lot of criticism from various quarters, while some prominent personalities demanded his release from jail.

People with disabilities: Inclusion and empowerment

Every year on the 3rd of December, the International Day for the People with Disabilities is observed with various programs and activities regarding the rights and issues of people with disabilities. Nepal is also celebrating the day with various awareness programs relating to the problems and issues of people with disabilities. The slogan of the disability day for this year is “Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of all abilities”.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD) recognizes in its preamble that “disability is an evolving concept that results from the interaction between person with impairments and attitudinal as well as environmental barriers that hinder their full and active participation in society on an equal basis with others. Likewise, the World Report on Disability cites and stresses that disability is the umbrella term for impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions referring to the negative aspects of the interaction between an individual (with a health condition) and that individual’s contextual factors (environmental and personal factors). The definition of disability, thus, does not concentrate only on the medical perception but also on other relevant aspects including social, environmental as well as psychological.
According to the World Report on Disability (WHO and the World Bank, 2011) about 15 per cent of the world’s population live with one or the other form of disability. In Nepal’s context, nearly 2 per cent of the total population, i.e. more than five hundred thousand people have disability. So it would not be inappropriate to say that such a large portion of population should and must be mainstreamed into the society for the entire development of the nation.
Disability, indeed, is a development as well as human rights issue. But the realization of their human rights is a huge challenge since they are not even recognized as part of the society. Persons with disabilities in the developing countries tend to be invisible, disadvantaged and forgotten in the context of development. For many persons with disabilities in the conservative societies like ours, their daily life is restricted to one room, to their home or the proximity thereof. Even in some customs and culture like ours, disability is considered as a result of sin committed on one’s previous life or by an ancestor. Consequently, it is extremely difficult for a person with disability to get a job or acquire an education. Participation in the societies is very difficult or impossible for them due to physical as well as information and communication related barriers. The stigma based on disability is severe in many parts particularly in rural areas of Nepal.
Under such circumstances, disability and development through the concepts of participation, empowerment and mainstreaming them into the society is essential. Because when a person gets to be empowered and/or mainstreamed, he/she has more opportunities to participate and become an active member to the society. The more the disability issues are mainstreamed into society, the more the society enables persons with disabilities to participate. Once empowered, a person has the capacity to advocate for his/her rights. As a result, their well being also tends to increase particularly in the field of education, employment and recreation.
It may be recalled here that the global historical event for the persons with disabilities is the adoption of United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The UNCRPD and its optional Protocols were adopted in December 2006 at the UN Headquarters and came into force on may 3rd 2008. The Convention was signed by Nepal on 13 December 2009. Till August 2014, altogether 147 states in the world have ratified the Convention. The Convention clearly re-iterates that persons with disabilities are active members of their society on an equal basis with others. It also highlights full and active participation of persons with disabilities in the development issues.
Needless to say that a person’s capacity is strengthened when he or she is given adequate opportunities to participate in the society. Indeed, all persons with disabilities have the right to be equal citizens and active participants in the society. But the irony is that many persons with disabilities in the developing countries live in an extremely unequal and disabling environment with limited personal capacity. And Nepal in this regard, is no exception. Disability is still considered something to be ashamed of in many cultures like ours. It is common for persons with disabilities to be kept hidden away and excluded from mainstreaming into the society.
There is no doubt that many persons with disabilities have talents and capabilities. But capacities of many persons with disabilities in the developing countries have been too frequently underestimated. Consequently, they tend not to be included in different activities of society on an equal basis with others.
Taking all these into consideration, empowering and mainstreaming the people with disabilities should and must be a part and parcel of development.

Nepal quake tough test for ‘world’s most dangerous airport

LUKLA: Flying into Nepal’s Lukla airport — the gateway to Mount Everest — demands courage and precision, thanks to its tiny, treacherous runway perched on a steep cliff.
For half a century, pilots have needed to navigate snow-capped peaks and endure erratic weather to land on a runway just 500 metres long, which has been carved into a mountain ridge and sits by a perilous three-kilometre (two-mile) drop.
A litany of deadly crashes, including one in October 2008 which killed all 18 on board except the pilot, has earned Lukla the nickname of the “world’s most dangerous airport”.
But when a massive earthquake hit Nepal eight months ago, triggering Everest’s deadliest avalanche and leaving hundreds of climbers and trekkers stranded, the tiny airfield faced its toughest test yet.
Helicopter pilot Nischal KC told AFP that even on an average day constant “weather changes and the steep terrain sometimes make landing impossible”.
In this photograph taken on July 30, 2015, Nepali helicopter pilot Nischal KC poses beside a helicopter in Kathmandu. Photo: AFP/ File
“It’s high-stakes work and there’s very little room for error,” he added.
Also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport after the first men to summit Everest, it has no radar system because of the high cost of installation, forcing officials to rely on an outdated voice communications system to track movements in the air.
“The pilots tell us when they are approaching, we give them updates on wind and traffic, then as the aircraft enters Lukla valley, we warn choppers to steer clear for the landing,” said air traffic controller Dinesh Koirala.
– Mass panic –
Things became even tougher in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake, which killed nearly 8,900 people across the impoverished Himalayan nation.
Rescue pilots seeking to reach Everest base camp, where an avalanche set off by the 7.8-magnitude quake killed 18 people, were held back for a day because of hostile weather.
When they were finally able to fly, rippling aftershocks brought the threat of further damage.
“Aftershocks kept coming that day but I was more stressed out by the weather. I knew that unless it cleared up, we could not send any choppers to rescue people injured by the avalanche,” air traffic controller Koirala told AFP.
Pilot KC, who has been flying in the Everest region for 14 years, recalls starting the day with a prayer.
“My first priority was to get the injured out of base camp but people higher up the mountain were panicking because of all the aftershocks,” the Manang Air pilot said.
He made dozens of trips that day to rescue terrified climbers desperate to get off the mountain, and to base camp to rescue the injured.
The frequency of aftershocks and the precarious terrain made landing even more difficult than usual, prompting the pilots to hover overhead and haul climbers up with ropes instead.
As rescuers carried dozens of quake victims into Lukla on sleeping bags doubling as stretchers, the tiny airport began to swell with hundreds of tourists haggling with airline officials for a ticket out.
Back in the control tower, Koirala and his colleagues embarked on the busiest week of their lives, closely monitoring the movement of planes and helicopters to ensure no accidents occurred mid-air.
“The whole week was a blur of flights — the fact that there were so many more aircraft than usual in the air made the job very stressful,” Koirala said.
– Edmund Hillary –
Prior to the airport’s construction in 1964, porters would spend days walking from Kathmandu to Lukla, carrying hundreds of kilos of expedition gear on their backs.
Mountaineering legend Edmund Hillary originally planned to build the airfield on flat ground — but local farmers refused to part with their fertile land.
Undeterred, he purchased a steep slope for $635 and recruited scores of Sherpa villagers to cut down scrub with knives.
The climber then plied villagers with local liquor and asked them to perform a foot-stomping traditional dance to flatten the land.
“A very festive mood prevailed and the earth received a most resounding thumping. Two days of this rather reduced the Sherpas’ enthusiasm for the dance but produced a firm and smooth surface for our airfield,” Hillary wrote in his 1998 memoir, “View from the Summit”.
As the number of climbers taking on the world’s highest mountain has boomed in recent decades, so traffic at Lukla airport — which can be accessed by helicopter or small aircraft — has increased.
Spring and autumn tourist seasons are the busiest, but closures are common since clear skies are essential for safe landing on the abbreviated clifftop runway.
Despite the challenges, some say its reputation for danger is undeserved.
“It’s unfair to call Lukla the most dangerous airport when there’s not much we can do about the terrain or the weather,” said Koirala.
“I have no doubt many lives were saved because this airport remained open after the quake.”

Blockade limits choices for apparel consumers

Nov 26, 2015- An unofficial Indian trade blockade and unrest in the Tarai have dampened sales of winter clothing as stores have not been able to offer new designs to their customers. At the same time, potential shoppers have become housebound due to a fuel shortage created by the embargo.
Although the winter season has already started, apparel dealers have no new offerings as their shipments are stuck at the border due to the blockade.
Stores in the Kathmandu Valley are waiting anxiously for the current problem to be resolved so that they can launch the latest designs trending in the market. Most shops have brought out their old stocks while some outlets have displayed new designs with heavy price tags. Traders said that prices were higher than last year as they had to bring their goods by expensive air cargo. “We have been able to offer only 10-15 percent of the clothing selections compared to last year,” said Hari Gyawali, proprietor of B4 Fashion located at People’s Plaza, Khicha Pokhari. He added that he had been buying small quantities of clothes from wholesalers at high prices.
Style Icon, an apparel store at City Centre, Kamal Pokhari, expressed the same sentiments. “Business is down 90 percent. First, we are not able to offer new products. Second, customers are not able to travel far to do their shopping because their vehicles are low on fuel,” said Rohit Nepal, manager of the showroom.
Even then, the shop has launched some jackets, sweaters, jumpers and hoods that were brought by air from China and Thailand. Prices of jackets range from Rs4,800 to Rs7,500, while jumpers and hoods cost between Rs2,200 and Rs2,500. Sweaters range in price from Rs2,200 to Rs3,500. According to traders, the goods cost 30-40 percent more due to higher air freight charges.
Surya Nepal, the manufacturer of Springwood and John Players brands of men’s wear, is yet to launch new designs. “Only around 50 percent of the designs for this winter have been launched.” said Ishwor Gautam, business head at the domestic garment department of Surya Nepal.
“This season should have been the busiest time of the year, but winter sales are the lowest in a decade,” said Parshuram Shrestha, proprietor of Men’s and Women’s Wear at Suraj Arcade, Makhan Tol. “We would bring winter clothes in wide colour options and special designs at this time with hopes of good sales, but our whole winter plan has been disrupted by the blockade.”

Kabaddi Kabaddi can feel like an amped-up retread of its predecessor

Dec 5, 2015- Given that last year’s Kabaddi, directed by Ram Babu Gurung, had pleasantly exceeded my expectations—thanks to a number of strong performances, a picturesque and utterly believable small-community setting, and good whacks of playful humour to tie it all together—the release of its sequel had naturally been something to look forward to. But while the new Kabaddi Kabaddi does retain much of what was good about its predecessor, it perhaps also clings to that brief a little too strongly: the film can frequently feel like an amped-up retread of the older one. It might boast a star-studded extended cast and cameos, more stylish visuals, catchier tunes and a slightly longer running time, but its all in the service of largely repetitive jokes (alongside the occasional distasteful one, but more on that later) as part of a script that often runs around in circles, not quite sure of where its going or what it wants to say. We’re back in the village of Naurikot, Mustang, and back in the company of the remarkably self-important Kaji (Dayahang Rai), who is more than a little surprised that the girl of his dreams, cousin Maiya (Rishma Gurung) is still being standoffish with him, despite him having exerted himself greatly to rescue her from the clutches of a young vengeance-seeking thug from Kathmandu (Nischal Basnet) in the last film. He had thought it a done deal, but try as he might to suit up (shiny shades perched just so on his nose) whenever he goes to see her, she seems intent on rebuffing him each time. And to make matters worse, there’s a new guy from the city sniffing around her now, the flashy Bom (Saugat Malla), who is in town to help his father, a village elder, to run in the upcoming elections. It’s a cause Kaji himself, as youth leader of the same party, really should be supporting, but Bom’s advances towards Maiya, and the fact that she seems to be falling for them, has him miffed. His dilemma is furthered when his uncle—and Maiya’s father (Shishir Bangdel)—drops in to run against Bom’s father, and is soon luring poor Kaji’s loyalties with an offer that is very, very difficult to turn down. Kaji and his two besties (Buddhi Tamang and Bijay Baral), having changed sides, must now go about convincing the rest of Naurikot’s residents to do the same. But party duties come a paltry second to the ups and downs of their love lives—all three are undergoing particular tangles in that area at the moment—to be poured and slurred over in the dimly-lit innards of their local bhatti. Kabaddi Kabaddi ropes in a few more big names this time, most prominent among these being Malla. But the performance is rather perfunctory, the kind of role the otherwise-talented actor has, for some reason, been inclined towards of late, and could probably do with his eyes closed by now—namely, the roguish charmer with the fancy coif and clothes. I found his character difficult to believe, and that over-the top posturing can get exasperating. Gurung, meanwhile, as the centre of all the fuss, is still a touch wooden, although that’s very possibly the fault of a script that allows her little to do except snap at people and glower. Thankfully, we have Rai, Tamang and Baral returning as the three none-too-brainy chums, and they are terrific as ever, exhibiting wonderful chemistry. To be honest, had the film included more scenes with these three in it—no grand hijinks necessary, just the usual silly bantering—it would’ve made for a far more likeable watch, given that the conversations between them comprise the brightest spots in the whole enterprise. As it is, however, it just packs in too much, tries too hard, and loses its way. It clearly wants to outdo the previous instalment, but its approach to that end largely involves showing more of the same stuff—including a basic plotline featuring yet another city slicker come to whisk Maiya away, the same sort of verbal sparring and never-ending awkward foot-and-fistfights between her two contenders, among others. These might have been funny the first time around, but just punching them in over and over again throughout the second film only serves to prolong scenes unnecessarily. There is, of course, the change of premise offered by the election, rife with comedic possibility, though sadly not mined to the extent that it could’ve been. And Bom’s back story, revealed in protracted bits, proves pretty darn underwhelming.   But what is, by far, most problematic about Kabaddi Kabaddi is a particular sub-plot that I felt to be in extremely poor taste. The long-running “gag”, although I won’t go into it in detail here, basically involves the drugging and raping of one of the female characters, which, to my intense surprise, most people in the theatre that I was watching the film in seemed to find absolutely, roll-on-the-floor hilarious. Now, before you roll your eyes and spew forth about how “it’s a comedy!” and how this should give it license to push limits—I hear you, and I agree that jokes treading such sensitive ground can be funny, even important, when done right. But it’s a very, very, very fine line between targeting misogyny with creative humour, and actually falling into the misogynistic trap oneself—and unfortunately, it’s the latter case for the new film. And so it was a hard sell for me from that point on, especially given that the joke is reiterated many times over throughout. To be fair to the filmmakers, they do make some reparations towards the end, but the fact that the subject is treated with such flippancy for such a long time by both the film and the audience means that the damage is well and truly done by then. To put it plainly, though its title might suggest twice as much entertainment as the first film, Kabaddi Kabaddi gets nowhere close in reality. Let’s just say, I’m not exactly holding my breath for a round three.

To provide free high speed wifi to the general public, Google is using Big Apple’s old phone booth. Google plans on using ten thousand more booths to provide the services that they promise.
They will be making necessary changes to those phone booths. They also promise to not only provide free wifi but also allow people to charge their phones in those booths. In addition to that people will also be able to make free of cost domestic calls says Google.
We have always known that Google has set no limits to their projects. They also plan to install touch screens on those phone booths. The touch screen will be used to display information about the city locations such as restaurants, museums, offices, coffee shops, etc. through maps.
According to the Bloomberg News, the phone booths will provide these services before the start of winter. Google is then going to expand the same services to other parts of the world after this trial is successful.
